On this Saturday, August 15th 2026, we headed to Aigues-Mortes, a fascinating medieval town in the heart of the Camargue, for a wonderful day combining history, culture, beautiful scenery and a relaxed summer atmosphere.
A Walk Through the Medieval Town
We began our day by exploring the medieval old town of Aigues-Mortes. Surrounded by impressive fortified walls, the town immediately transports visitors back in time. We wandered through its charming narrow streets, discovering historic buildings, small shops and picturesque corners along the way. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with plenty of opportunities to stop, take photos and simply enjoy the unique charm of the town. We also spent some time in the town’s beautiful squares, including the famous Place Saint-Louis, the heart of Aigues-Mortes. With its cafés, terraces and lively atmosphere, it was the perfect place to take a break and soak up the Provençal and Mediterranean ambiance.
Discovering the Salt Flats by Little Train
In the afternoon, we continued our adventure with a little train tour through the Aigues-Mortes salt flats. The landscape changed completely as we left the medieval town behind and entered the vast salt-producing area. The tour offered us a fascinating glimpse into the traditional production of salt, while allowing us to enjoy the remarkable scenery of the Camargue. The salt ponds, wide open spaces and changing colors created a beautiful and sometimes almost surreal landscape. Along the way, we learned more about the history of the salt flats, their production methods and the natural environment surrounding them.
A Perfect Day Between History and Nature
This outing to Aigues-Mortes was a wonderful opportunity to experience two very different sides of the region: its rich medieval heritage and the unique natural landscapes of the Camargue. From strolling through the historic streets and picturesque squares to discovering the salt flats by little train, it was a day full of history, culture, nature and memorable moments. Aigues-Mortes once again proved to be a destination where the past and the natural beauty of the Camargue come together perfectly.
